Michael Giacchino Steps in to Score ‘Rogue One’

on

Alexandre Desplat will no longer create the score for the first Star Wars standalone film. BUT: The incredible Oscar-winning Michael Giacchino will take his place.

Desplat, who previously composed Argo and The Grand Budapest Hotel, was no longer available to score, due to schedule conflicts introduced by the reshoots for Rogue One. In the search for a new composer, Disney and Lucasfilm turned to Giacchino, who has a long history with the studio.

Giacchino’s most beloved work has come out of his collaboration with Pixar on the films The Incredibles,Ratatouille, Up, Cars 2, and Inside Out. He also scored this year’s Disney Animation breakout Zootopia, and has previously worked with the live-action division on Sky High, John Carter, and Tomorrowland.

Giacchino, a self-professed Star Wars fan and a devoted fan of  John Williams, is also a career-long collaborator of J.J. Abrams and had a cameo as a storm trooper in The Force Awakens. Fittingly, he now becomes the first composer to work on a Star Wars movie besides Williams.

I’m excited to hear this! I really became a fan of Michael Guacchino after his work on Lost. Part of what made the show so immersive, in my opinion, was his amazing talent for scoring it.

Hearing that he’s a fan of Williams, I expect he will do Rogue One true justice and it will be amazing.

Thanks for the follow! You’re absolutely right about music being such an integral layer in a movie. Who says a stormtrooper can’t have side hobbies? They’ve got to have something to do between all that horribly inaccurate shooting. Needlepoint, gardening, scoring blockbuster movies…

I’ve always thought Giacchino would be the best replacement for Williams. He has a very similar sound in movies like Super 8 or even the Incredibles, and I can’t wait to see how Rogue One turns out with him working behind it.
